It all depends on how often you hike and how much you get out of your boots. You should replace your pair when the tread starts to wear then, the shoes start to develop holes, or anything else that will make your hiking more difficult and less comfortable. The same can be said for any type of shoe really, especially ones in which you are exercising and will need support and comfort.
A hiking boot that has gotten great customer reviews for durability, fit, and overall hiking comfort is the Mephisto Impala.
Some other signs that you should replace your boots are if the soles are worn smooth and no longer provide adequate traction, if water or debris begins to seep through the boot, if you start to get blisters or hot spots, if the lining becomes worn, and if the seam begins to split.
