It is recommended that you do not allow your lawn to grow so tall that you have to mow off more than 1/3 of the grass blade. If too much grass is removed, this will “stop the flow of food to the grass roots, weakens the grass plants making your new lawn grass susceptible to diseases.” Always make sure your lawn mower blades are sharp. Dull ones will chew the grass or pull it from the roots.
In general, a good height before cutting is 3 2/3 inches high. How much you cut, though, will depend on the type of grass, with a third of the height as a general marker.
