It is commonly believed that gold fish have a memory somewhere around 3 seconds; however, research has shown that this isn’t the case. Gold fish are capable of learning feeding patters. For example, if a gold fish is only fed after pushing a button, the fish will rapidly learn to repeat this behavior. For this type of learning to occur, the fish must have a memory that is longer than a few seconds. It is accepted that gold fish have a memory that spans about 3 months.
