How long is it going to take to pay off the energy efficiency upgrades for the empire state building?

Surprisingly not that long. The total upgrades cost about $13 million to create, but the building owners anticipate them cutting costs by $4 million per year. This is due to the scale of the upgrades: had they done something like only changed the windows, the payback period would have been much higher. The most important upgrade was in the chillers, which now include variable drives and other energy saving implements. Click here to read more about the changes.
