All nuclear power plants in Germany will be closed by 2022, according to their government. The decision comes in the wake of a panel reviewing the safety of Germany’s nuclear program, as well as a series of protests throughout the country.
In the place of nuclear power, everywhere in the in country bio-gas plants are being built, the foundations for solar farms are being laid and wind turbines are being erected. The phasing out of nuclear energy requires the use of renewable energies for 35% of Germany’s energy needs. Germany has massive government subsidies for renewable energy and there is currently a debate which would allocate less money to solar energy technologies. The fact is there are plans to reopen one of the recently closed nuclear power plants because current analysis show that solar energy won’t be able to adequately pick up the slack in the winter months.
