How long have we been using landfills to store trash?

Landfills are historically the oldest method by which human societies have disposed of trash. Archaeologists have discovered examples of landfills, or middens as they used to be called, in the United Kingdom dating back to 1000 B.C.! Ancient examples include both one-time-use deposits made by nomadic societies, as well as more long-term refuse sites used by sedentary societies. Unfortunately it has taken us a few thousand years to realize burying our trash might not be the best disposal method in the long run.
