Trees have not been used as of yet for fueling vehicles. Research has just been published from the University of Georgia, which has been studying the use of dead forest materials to fuel cars. Tolero Energy has a license for turning dead trees into liquid fuel and we can hope to start using this new biofuel sometimes in 2010.
The use of trees as fuel began with the invention of fire, between 800,000 and 1,000,000 years ago. Trees are still used as fuel today thanks to their ability to rapidly grow and renew themselves.
