Animal testing began as early as the 17th century. Philosopher Jeremy Bentham rejected the idea Rene Descartes came up with that animals cannot feel pain or emotions. With the discovery that animals can feel pain, Bentham realized that animals may better mimic the feelings of humans than expected.

Cosmetic testing first started on animals in 1933 due to a woman who died due to her eyes being burned out by maskera (seriously).

In 1989, Revlon and Avon both ended animal testing completely and began a trend of animal safe products.
