It is hard to say when large scale solar power plants were first established, but I would put it somewhere around 1980s after the 1979 oil crisis. Most likely that was a turning point towards renewable sources, but back then it wasn’t implemented as heavily as it is today. Between 1970 and 1983 solar was becoming popular but falling oil prices after 1984 made these alternatives much more expensive. Since 2000 photovoltaic (main component of solar panels) has risen 40% every year.
