There is a very informative timeline on the U.S. Department of Energy’s website about the history of solar power. According to the timeline, solar panels have been developed and manufactured since the early 1970’s. It was precisley in 1973 when the first solar residence was built. In the year 2000, the company First Solar began operations in Perrysburg, OH as the world’s largest solar panel manufacturing plant.
As nellieliz4 said, we have been putting solar panels on homes for a long time. In fact, the White House had solar panels installed in 1979. However, Reagan took the panels off when he became President. This just goes to show how perfectly good environmental initiatives can be roadblocked by politicians who receive contributions from oil companies. Jimmy Carter was a very environmental president who kept the White House heating bill low in the winter by asking everybody inside to put on a sweater instead of heating the house to room temperature.
