Although the very first transplant of an artificial heart was done in 1982, when William DeVries implanted Barney Clark with the Jarvik-7, it didn’t really become commonplace until 2004, when the resultes of a 10 year clinical trial meant that artifical hearts were approval by the FDA. However, the Artificial Hearts approved in 2004 were only meant as stopgap measures, and it was another two years before the FDA approved an artificial heart meant to be a permanent replacement for a human heart in 2006.
