Recycling for profit has been commonplace since pre-industrial times. Evidence for smelting and recycling have been discovered as early as the Late Bronze Age (approximately 1400 BCE). Items would be melted down, manufactured and traded. After the Industrial Revolution, peddlers in the 1800’s were considered to be some of the first recycling entrepreneurs -selling and recycling whatever was deemed to have resale value. Today, redeeming items (ie. cans, glass and bottles) for cash value, also known as container deposit legislation was first enacted in the 1970’s
