The Rocky Flats cleanup technically started in the early 90’s after the Sierra Club vs. Rockwell case in which the Sierra Club won. I have heard from my father, however, who worked there for 15 years until their closing in 2006, that it wasn’t until 2000 that any real cleanup efforts were made. The last weapons grade plutonium was removed in 2003, and the last contaminated building was removed at the same time. In June of 2007 the EPA certified the cleanup, and it was turned over to US Fish and Wildlife service in July of 2007 to be established as the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge.
