Evidence shows that Aztecs used aquaponics to farm fish and vegetables…so “we” have been using aquaponics for a long time!
(Much) Later, in the 70’s, researchers began having renewed conversations about irrigating vegetables from ponds where fish were raised. Although this is not technically hyroponics, because its not a completely circular system. Water from nourished by fish was simply being used to irrigate a nearby crop.
At North Carolina State University in 1985, 3 researchers developed the first closed loop aquaponic system. Since then, aquaponics has been considered for use in 3rd world countries, especially in central Africa.
