Viruses probably evolved shortly after cells, so about 3.8 billion years ago.
There are three major theories on how they evolved:
1) Viruses started out as small cells living in other cells, and then just lost what they did not need as a virus.
2) Viruses could be small pieces of DNA or RNA that evolved into viruses.
3) Viruses could have evolved from compounds of protein and nucleic acid at the same time that normal cells formed.
