Redwoods are known for their longevity, and some of the redwoods that are still alive in CA today have been alive for hundreds of years (the normal lifespan is between 500 and 2000 years).  However, they have been growing in that region for millions of years.  One website even speculates that they were much more widespread before the last ice age and that their present range in California is only a fraction of what it used to be.
