Salmon has been eaten in the Americas for as long as people have been living here. Well before the colonist showed up in America, salmon was being used as a food source for Native American tribes. Tribes in the Northwest such as the Haida and the Nootka were known to eat salmon often. According to some Native American mythology, salmon were real people with supernatural powers. The salmon would offer themselves as food and upon being eaten, their spirits would return back into the ocean to be reborn as another salmon person.
