The earliest known pyramid is the Pyramid of Djoser, built in the 27th century B.C.. The pyramid was designed for the pharaoh Djoser by Imhotep, his vizier. Previously, rich Egyptians had themselves buried under bench-like structures calles mastabas. Imhotep came up with the idea of stacking mastabas on top of one another to make a pyramid shape. For his innovation, Imhotep was later deified by the ancient Egyptians.

The Pyramid of Djoser is a step pyramid, built of six stone levels stacked on top of one another. It originally stood 203 feet (63m) tall.
