The Coelacanth first shows up in fossil records in a period called the Middle Devonian. This period in Earth’s history occurred 416-359.2 million years ago.

A fossil of a Coelacanth has been dated to be 250 million years old. They were believed to have gone extinct 65 million years ago, until a population was found in 1938. They have continued to be found and studied since.
