The Canadian Athabasca oil sands were first remarked upon by fur trader Peter Pond in 1778. Decades of research and development for oil sand projects began in the early 1900s. By 1921, the Alberta Research Council was formed and supported projects to make the oil sand bitumen into a usable product. In 1962, the Alberta government announced plans for the Great Canadian Oil Sands project. The first major production, Suncor, came online in 1967. Today, oil sands account for 46% of Canada’s oil production.
