The first high speed train line in Japan was the Tokaido Shinkansen. It opened for commercial service in October 1964. I rode on the line about six years ago when I was visiting Tokyo. Their public transportation system is amazingly precise and efficient.
In addition, since the Tokaido line, Japan has added five more shinkansen lines. They are the Sanyo, Tohoku, Joetsu, Nagano, and Kyushu lines. Japan Railways has also been planning the Chuo line from Tokyo to Osaka since the 1970’s. Just in case you were interested. 🙂
