I think it began in the early 1970s. That is when curbside recycling began showing up in places such as Berkeley, California. It is also around this time that we started to realize that waste was building up in landfills with nowhere to put it and that it posed a danger to human health. Since recycling started to become mandated in the 1980s, we have consistently realized the effects of human activity on the environment. Now, instead of simply using all available resources without considering the consequences, we are in the heart of the ‘green revolution’ with a goal of sustainable living.
