Quantitative analysis of a pacific garbage patch was recorded by a paper published in 1988 by the National Oceanic and Atmopheric Assosciation (NOAA), written by scientists based in Alaska. The paper was written to reinforce and support existing quanitative knowledge about plasic debris in the pacific published in the late saventies and early eighties. Thus the garbage patch has been thoroughly observed for its behavior and patterns since the late seventies, with the eastern Japanese coast being the central focus of most research.
