Although we have only been measuring current concentrations of carbon dioxide in our air since the 1970’s, people have been able to extrapolate carbon dioxide concentrations in years before that by using bubbles trapped in ice. So, the answer is that we have only started paying attention to it recently, but we can look back in time to see what the atmosphere was like thousands of years ago.
