The Monterey Bay Aquarium opened on October 20, 1984. It will be celebrating its 27th year this year in 2011.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California opened its doors on October 20, 1984. It was designed by the Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis architectural firm. David and Lucile Packard financed the building for $55 million. It almost doubled its size in 1996 with the addition of the Outer Bay Wing, which features the open ocean and deep sea. Today, the aquarium is home to 550 species of plants and animals and is visited by 1.8 million people every year.
