    Typically, the gestation period, or the time that a mama whale carries her calf, ranges from nine to twelve months. Some whale species, like the Sperm Whale, carry their young for up to sixteen months!

    This also depends on the type of whale.  The Odontocetes (toothed whales) and Mysticetes (baleen whales) have different gestation lengths.  Mysticetes will carry their young anywhere from 10-14 months while Odontocete gestation can last anywhere from 9-17 months.
