In central Panama there are several teak plantations. In general, the local people suggest that they can harvest the trees after 40 years. This wood would provide nice boards. However, if the tree is allowed to grow longer, it will increase in size and provide larger pieces. Some very old natrual growing trees (ones not in a plantation) are cut to make table tops (a cross section is the entire table top!). This can be detrimental to an old-growth forest.
