Nuclear waste can pose a threat to human health and the environment for up to 10,000 years. The longer the waste is stored, the less hazardous it becomes due to the decreasing amount of radiation the waste emits due to the half-life of the waste. For a proposed nuclear waste storage facility, the EPA recommends a 1 million year storage ability in order to completely reduce the risk of any human or environmental hazards. Even small amounts of waste can contaminate groundwater supplies and other natural resources.
