Good question, Yasmin87. It depends on a lot of factors, actually. Some lava cools right away because it comes into contact with water, forming obsidian rock, or volcanic glass. Other lava takes a long time to cool. One particular study of lava showed that the crust of lava that had began at 768 degrees Celsius only cooled to 410 degrees Celsius after about an hour.
