It really depends on the size of the landfill and the rate at which waste is dumped there. These days, Americans generate so much trash- about 390 million tons a year- that many landfills are in danger of filling up soon. 100 landfills closed just last year. When this capacity problem was encountered in a town in Delaware, the landfill was expanded to allow 16.7 million tons of solid waste capacity, which will keep it running for 20 more years.
