Perimineraliztion, or the process by which organic material is replaced with stone, varies in length according to the type of material petrified. For trees, composed of sturdy sugars called cellulose, the perimineralization process is relatively quick, with a mid-sized petrified tree turned completely to stone roughly 85-90 years from the date of origin.
