It takes approximately 24 hours and 50 minutes for a tide to go through its full cycle. This is due to tides having a gravitational attraction to the moon, which is rotating the earth. At the same time the earth is rotating on it axis. So the 24 hours is the earths rotational cycle, and the 50 minutes comes from the 12 degree rotation the moon makes around the earth in one day.
