How long does it take a seed to start to break open?

    This is entirely dependant upon the type of seed and environmental factors (moisture, light, darkness, soil, sand…list goes on).
    Many seeds will only germinate between a certain range of temperatures.

    germination of Strelitzia or similar plants may take up to 7 days to break seed

    Clivia and similar: germination may take as long as 3 weeks.

    Certain species of Fern can take up to 5 months to first break seed!
