How long does it take for a plastic bottle to break down in a landfill?

A standard plastic bottle takes around 1000 years to degrade in a landfill. With the amount of bottled water Americans buy, there is bound to be a large percentage that doesn’t get recycled and ends up in a landfill. Companies like Biota are trying to develop plastic bottles that biodegrade quicker (Biota boasts a bottle that biodegrades in 80 days). Consumers, meanwhile should be more aware of the amount they consume and where their bottles end up.
