The time it takes for a coal plant permit to go through takes years. One example is the Navajo coal plant in New Mexico. For many years they have tried to obtain a permit but they keep getting withdrawn. The reason behind this complicated process is that, especially in our age of problematic greenhouse gases, air pollution is a major concern. In addition, there are problems related to toxic waste and effect on endangered species even despite the fact that these coal plants will bring in needed revenue.
