    According to some experts, it can take anywhere from 18 months to 10 years for discarded cigarettes to decompose!

    It can take 12 years for cigarette butts to start breaking apart. When cigarette butts come in contact with water, within an hour they can begin to leach arsenic, cadmium, and lead into the environment. It is estimated that about 1/3 of cigarette butts end up as litter.
