It would depend on the size of the pearl. The larger the pearl, the longer it took to develop. Natural pearls can take years before they get to a decent size. To give you an idea, one particular species of oyster can secrete nacre (the coating material) over an irritant at a rate of about 0.1mm to 0.2mm per year.
