Lobsters sexually mature by molting, a process which makes them grow and allows them to mate. Molting occurs by periodically shedding the exoskeleton (the shell). After 15-25 days after being born, lobsters will have gone through their first four molts. All of this depends on the water temperature though. Lobsters mate after molting, because at that time the female’s shell is especially soft. After the first four molts young lobsters reach their adult form, but do not reach sexual maturity for about 5-8 years. Over that time they will molt 20-25 times, but will molt ten times during their first year. Molting decreases with age. Unfortunately, many lobsters are caught before they reach sexual maturity.
