Gorillas can often be considered silverbacks when they reach about 12 or 13 years old. Most will reach their full adult size by the time they are 15. Males between 8 and 12 years old are referred to as “blackbacks” and typically tend to reach reproductive maturity around 10.

Silverbacks are male gorillas. They develop a silver tinge on their back by the time they are 13 years old, when they are considered adults. Silverbacks become the alpha leader of their troop, which can consist of 30 apes.
