It’s extremely difficult to remove all traces of human feces from water, although most conventional water-treatment plants can remove enough to dramatically decrease the content, making water safe to drink.
A study was done with the Ohio River, and it depended on quite a few factors-temperature, eukaryotes, etc. It found that most traces were gone by 14 days.
