How long does it take the earth to produce coal?

Millions and millions of years. The coal we have today is about 300 million years old. It is the result of ancient vegetation being buried and pressed and pressed until it forms coal. The energy stored in the coal is the same energy that was captured by those plants millions of years ago by photosynthetic means.
