Dogs were in the beginning stages of domestication as early as 12,000 years ago. They started as wolves who were taken in by people, and they established their lesser-than-human place in the pack. After that, selective breeding yielded various dogs: work, family, aggressive, passive, etc. Farm animals started being domesticated in 9000-4000 BC. Cats are still roughly domesticated, but probably the least domesticated of common pets, having been “domesticated” about 3000 BC. It isn’t really wise to domesticate a wild animal because they have their natural instincts and roots, but animals can be domesticated to an extent. The easiest time to do this is when they’re babies. They have time to learn their place in your family, but they still struggle with their basic instincts.
