In home experiments crystals can be grown in minutes by utilizing a freezer to help speed up the crystalization process. In nature crystals grow much slower, but some still grow at surprising rates.

There are a lot of factors that will contribute or hinder crystal growth. Crystals in a cave typically grow much faster than those not in the same environment.

Some crystals can grow at rates of only 2 mm per year whereas researches in California estimated the growth of pegmatites in California to grow at a rate of 2in per day.
