Pollutants from China are carried on the Jet Stream across the Pacific Ocean to America in a matter of days. Pollutants from Asia that travel to the United States are increasing at a rate of 5 to 10 percent per year. On some days, it is estimated that up to 25% of air pollution in L.A. comes from China. Pollution that comes from outside the U.S. is known as transpollution. Soot, dust, nitrous oxides and ozone can be detected by satellites positioned over the Pacific Ocean. Most of these transpollutants are dust and greenhouse emissions from factories and mass transportation.
