It may in fact never decompose. The chewy material in gum is “non nutritive” substance containing things rubber like elastomers, and resins. Gum is virtually immune to the human digestive process (though it does pass through the digestive system, it emerges almost unaltered). This immunity to biological processes–and its inorganic nature–suggests that, like plastic, gum may not decompose at all.
