How long does it take a boyscout to become an eagle scout?

The Boy Scout handbook suggests that attaining the rank of eagle scout should take about 2.5 years. Becoming an eagle scout requires boy scouts to earn at least 21 merit badges, to complete an extensive service project and follow-up report, and to demonstrate Scout Spirit, service, and leadership. This process must be completed before a participant’s 18th birthday. Most Scouts who endure and remain with the program will receive their award at sometime during their 16th or 17th year.
