Decomposition occurs in five stages: Fresh, Bloat, Active decay, Advanced decay, and Dry/remains also referred to as skeletonization. The time it takes for a body to decompose really depends on temperature. With normal or average temperatures, the body can decompose within two years.
It could take decades and depends on many factors. Some of the things that affect the rate of decomposition are – how the person was embalmed, are they in a wood casket or another material, how deep in the ground or are they in a vault. The surrounding area including climate can affect the rate as well. The body will go through all the normal steps of decomposition, just at a different rate depedning on these factors.
