The skull is made up of 21 bones, with 14 in the facial area and 7 in the skull itself. The bones join together at what are called sutures. In babies, the place where two sutures join together is called a fontanelle. Fontanelles are membrane-covered “soft spots” that harden over time. Infants typically have several fontanelles, located at the back, top, and sides of the head. The back fontanelle hardens 1-2 months after birth while the one at the top hardens between 7-19 months.
