Well cigarette smoke as it rises in the atmosphere will typically break down while forming into different compounds that is toxic to the atmosphere. For instance, we know that trace amounts of urea, arsenic, and carbon monoxide are key contributors to the harmful effects in our atmosphere, but It may not be a matter of how long the smoke remains in the atmosphere, but rather how much damage it does per cigarette.
