A better question might be, “How long will the excess Carbon Dioxide stay in the atmosphere.” The reason is that if the CO2 is in the atmosphere, for as long as it remains there it creates warmer conditions. CO2 increases the opacity of our atmosphere to thermal radiation, trapping energy which warms the planet. Even if we severely decreased greenhouse gas emmissions, the temperature of the planet would still increase before lowering in about 50 years.
